Description

The oxygen (lambda) sensor measures the residual oxygen content in the exhaust stream and reports it to the engine control unit, which continuously trims injection duration toward the stoichiometric air–fuel ratio. On the multi-point injection Niva (21214, 2131) built to Euro 3 and later emission levels, two identical sensors are fitted: a control sensor ahead of the catalytic converter and a diagnostic sensor behind it that monitors converter efficiency. The sensor is a heated planar zirconia type, which reaches operating temperature quickly and allows closed-loop fuel control shortly after a cold start.

Signs of a failing oxygen sensor

  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Rough or erratic idle
  • Reduced engine power and sluggish throttle response
  • Check engine light with oxygen sensor or heater circuit fault codes (e.g. P0036–P0038 for the post-catalyst sensor heater)

Installation notes

Screws into an M18x1.5 boss in the downpipe; use a slotted oxygen sensor socket to clear the cable. Apply anti-seize to the threads only if the replacement sensor is not pre-greased, and keep the sensor tip away from oil, grease and silicone sealants — contamination poisons the sensing element. Route the cable clear of hot exhaust surfaces and verify the connector locks fully.

Fitment note

Euro 3 and Euro 4 vehicles use two of this sensor: the pre-catalyst (control) and post-catalyst (diagnostic) positions take the same part number, so a full replacement requires two units. Connector is a rectangular 4-pin plug. The mounting bosses sit in the exhaust downpipe — match the downpipe to your emission level (Euro 3: 21214-1203010-30, Euro 4: 21214-1203010-40).
